Tutorial: Pillowcase Using the Burrito Method with French Seams
Materials Needed:
- Fabric A: 27 inches x 42 inches
- Fabric B: 9 inches x 42 inches
- Fabric C: 2 inches x 42 inches
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Iron
#### Steps:
1. **Prepare the Fabrics**:
- Iron all your fabrics to make them flat.
- Cut the fabrics to the indicated dimensions if not already done.
2. **Assembling the Fabric Strips**:
- Take Fabric C (2" x 42") and fold it in half lengthwise, right sides together. Iron to mark the fold.
- Pin the raw edge of Fabric C along one long edge of Fabric B (9" x 42"). Sew 1/4" from the edge. Now you have a set of strips with a folded edge.
3. **Assembling the Pillowcase Body**:
- Lay Fabric A (27" x 42") flat, right side up.
- Place Fabric B (with the attached border C) right sides together along the top edge of Fabric A. Pin.
- Roll Fabric A from the bottom up until it's rolled in the middle. You should now have a "burrito" with Fabrics B and C around the roll of Fabric A.
- Bring the free edge of Fabric A over the roll, aligning it with the top edge of Fabric B. Pin all the edges together.
- Sew 1/4" from the edge, being careful not to sew the inner roll.
4. **Turning the Burrito**:
- Gently pull Fabric A out of the roll through the side opening. You will see that all raw edges are now inside and the seam is clean outside.
- Iron well to flatten the seams.
5. **French Seams for the Sides**:
- Fold the pillowcase in half, wrong sides together, and pin the two open sides.
- Sew the two sides 1/4" from the edge.
- Turn the pillowcase inside out. Iron the seams to make them flat.
- Sew the two sides again, this time 3/8" from the edge. This will encase the raw edges inside the French seam, leaving a clean finish inside.
6. **Finishing**:
- Turn the pillowcase right side out and iron it to make it neat.
- Check the seams to ensure they are strong and well-finished.
And that's it! You now have a pillowcase with a professional finish using the burrito method and French seams.
